Guest Designer - Norine Borys

Hello again Magenta friends!
Norine from The Velvet Lemon back again today for a guest post. I want to share a couple of cards that came about purely by accident!

Bonjour
Norine from The Velvet Lemon revient encore aujourd'hui pour un poste d'invité.

If you keep track of current paper crafting trends, you might be aware of the revival of alcohol inks?  I recently acquired some bright new colours and wanted to play with them a little on Yupo paper.  Yupo is not actually paper, but a completely synthetic plastic with attributes that make it perfect for using with alcohol ink.  I decided to try "sponging" with a cotton ball dipped in puddles of alcohol ink and pounced through the openings of a stencil.  I was curious if the liquid would seep underneath the plastic, and I was pleased to observe that it did a much better job of staying contained than, for example, this same technique done with watercolour paint and paper.  The photo above shows my experimental effort, and because Yupo paper is not inexpensive, if the results are passable, it will become a card!

I also wanted to try some doodling with Sharpie pens on the Yupo paper as well.  They are alcohol based pens so they work well on the impervious plastic surface that Yupo "paper" is.  It's a very fun and free-ing process to add more to the basic shape of the stencil by adding lines and swirls with a pen, giving a simple design that added WOW factor!

And obviously, if some is good, more is better, so I pulled out another stencil and continued to play!  For the next card, I combined some blue and green alcohol inks with a little blending of colour where they overlapped and mixed.  I also pounced some pale colour onto the background behind the stencil design for a little more interest.

The sky is the limit when it comes to doodling and it's fun to look for additional shapes that aren't readily apparent, and bring them out with a fine tipped Sharpie pen.  I paired this design with some coordinating patterned papers and some black stitch lines that mimic a miniature quilt!

Norine, This idea of alcohol inking with stencils is a great idea. I especially like the added touches of zentangle since I enjoy doing this as well. Your finished cards are so lovely. tfs
